How to print sudoku puzzles
- Choose a difficulty. Easy, medium, hard or expert for classic 9×9 puzzles. Kids and beginners can switch the grid size to 6×6 or 4×4.
- Choose how many puzzles per page. One big puzzle is easiest to read, two fit nicely for a quick break, and four or six per page save paper for puzzle books and classrooms.
- Pick your paper. Letter or A4. The sheet is sized so the puzzles always fit on one page.
- Press Print / Save PDF. Your browser’s print dialog opens. Choose a printer, or choose “Save as PDF” to keep a file.
The preview above is exactly what prints. The site header, buttons and other page parts are left out of the printout automatically.
Sudoku difficulty levels explained
Many generators only remove more numbers to make a puzzle “harder”. This one grades each puzzle by the solving techniques it actually needs, then checks the clue count.
| Level | Clues (9×9) | What you need to solve it |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | 36–39 | Only singles: a cell with one possible number, or a number with only one place in a row, column or box. |
| Medium | 28–31 | Still singles only, but fewer clues means you scan more carefully and longer. |
| Hard | usually 22–29 | At least one intermediate step: pointing pairs, box/line reduction, or naked and hidden pairs or triples. |
| Expert | usually 21–29 | Cannot be finished with the techniques above. Expect X-wings, swordfish, chains or a careful guess and check. |
Each level has its own page with tips and a matching preset: easy sudoku, medium sudoku and hard and expert sudoku. There are also pages for large print sudoku and sudoku for kids (4×4 and 6×6).
Unique solutions, checked by a solver
A proper sudoku has exactly one answer. After each puzzle is made, a backtracking solver counts its solutions and stops if it finds a second one. Puzzles with two answers are thrown away, so you will never reach the end of a grid and find two numbers that both fit.
Share or repeat the same puzzles
Each set of puzzles comes from a short seed. The share link holds that seed plus your settings, so a teacher can send one link and every student prints identical puzzles, or you can reprint a sheet next week. “New puzzles” picks a new seed.
Printing tips
- Set scaling to 100% or Actual size. “Fit to page” can shrink the grid a little, but it will still fit on one page.
- Turn off “Headers and footers” in the print dialog if your browser adds the date and web address to the page edges.
- Tick Large print for bolder lines and bigger numbers. It works best with 1 or 2 puzzles per page.
- To print only the puzzles, untick the answer key, or print page 1 only.
Frequently asked questions
Is this printable sudoku generator free?
Yes. Every puzzle and answer key is free to print, copy for a classroom, or save as a PDF. There is no account and no watermark.
Does every puzzle have exactly one solution?
Yes. After a puzzle is made, a solver counts its solutions and the puzzle is only kept when there is exactly one. We tested more than 5,000 generated puzzles across all levels and grid sizes before launch.
How are the difficulty levels decided?
By the solving techniques a puzzle needs and by its clue count. Easy and medium puzzles can be finished with singles only (easy has 36–39 clues, medium 28–31). Hard puzzles need at least one intermediate technique such as pointing pairs or naked pairs. Expert puzzles cannot be finished even with those techniques, so you will need X-wings, chains or careful trial.
How do I print sudoku with the answers on a separate page?
Leave “Answer key on page 2” ticked and press Print / Save PDF. Page 1 holds the puzzles and page 2 holds the solutions in the same order, so you can print page 1 only, or both pages.
How do I get the same puzzles again?
Copy the share link. It holds a seed and your settings, and opening it rebuilds exactly the same puzzles and answers on any device. Press “New puzzles” for a fresh set.
Should I choose Letter or A4?
Pick the paper in your printer. Letter (8.5 × 11 in) is standard in the US and Canada, A4 (210 × 297 mm) almost everywhere else. Each choice is laid out to fit one sheet, so print at 100% or “Actual size” rather than “Fit to page”.
Are my puzzles sent anywhere?
No. The generator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and the site does not need an account.
