What medium difficulty means here
Medium puzzles use the same two moves as easy ones, naked singles and hidden singles, but start with only 28 to 31 clues. There is less to work from, so you scan more and the next move is harder to see. You never need a guess or an advanced pattern, but you do need to look for hidden singles, where a number has only one possible place in a row, column or box.
Medium compared with easy and hard
| Level | Clues | Techniques needed |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | 36–39 | Singles, mostly naked singles |
| Medium | 28–31 | Singles, with many hidden singles |
| Hard | usually 22–29 | Pointing pairs, box/line reduction, naked or hidden pairs and triples |
Tips for medium sudoku
- Scan by number, then by row. Easy puzzles often fall to naked singles. Medium ones need you to ask “where can the 7 go in this box?” much more often.
- Use small pencil marks. When a box has only two places for a number, note both. Those notes often turn into a single a few moves later.
- Don't guess. Every medium puzzle can be solved by logic alone. If you are stuck, a hidden single is waiting somewhere.
A good daily puzzle
Medium is the level most people print for a daily habit or a newspaper-style puzzle with their coffee. Four puzzles per page give you several days of puzzles on one sheet, and six per page save even more paper if you don't mind smaller grids.
Frequently asked questions
How hard is a medium sudoku?
It needs only basic moves (naked and hidden singles) but starts with 28–31 clues, so you scan more. It is a step up from easy without any advanced techniques.
Do medium puzzles have one solution?
Yes. Every puzzle is checked by a solver that counts solutions, and only puzzles with exactly one solution are printed.
Can I print the same medium puzzles again later?
Yes. Copy the share link before printing. Opening it rebuilds exactly the same puzzles and answers.
How many medium puzzles can I fit on one page?
One, two, four or six. Four per page is a good balance between grid size and paper use.
