Sudoku sized for children

A full 9×9 grid is a lot for a young child. The smaller grids use the same rule with fewer numbers:

4×41–4four 2×2 boxesFirst puzzles, often from about age 5 or 6
6×61–6six 2×3 boxesChildren who find 4×4 easy, often from about age 7
9×9 easy1–9nine 3×3 boxesConfident solvers ready for the classic size

Ages are only a rough guide. Let the child's confidence decide when to move up a size.

Difficulty for kids puzzles

Every kids puzzle can be solved with simple logic, with no guessing. The level sets how many numbers are given at the start:

Expert is only for 9×9, so it is turned off for the small grids.

How to teach sudoku to a child

  1. Start with a 4×4 easy puzzle. Explain the rule with one row: “each number 1 to 4 appears once”.
  2. Point at a row with three numbers and ask which one is missing. That is the whole idea of sudoku.
  3. Next, show that columns and boxes follow the same rule.
  4. Let them check their own work with the answer key on page 2. Tick large print for even bigger digits.

For teachers

Six 6×6 puzzles fit on one sheet, so one page keeps a class busy for a while. Copy the share link and save it with your lesson plan to reprint exactly the same sheet and answer key later, or send it to a colleague. Sudoku practises logical reasoning, patience and checking your own work, and it needs no arithmetic.

How does a 6×6 sudoku work?

Each row, each column and each 2×3 box must contain the numbers 1 to 6 exactly once.

Does sudoku need maths?

No. Sudoku uses numbers as symbols, and no adding is needed. It practises logic and careful checking.

Can I print kids sudoku with the answers?

Yes. The answer key prints on page 2 in the same order, so children can check their own work.

Are the kids puzzles free for classroom use?

Yes. Print as many as you need for your class. No account is needed.
